abstract
New measurements of the expansion rate of the Universe have plunged the standard model of cosmology into a severe crisis. In this letter, we propose a simple resolution to the problem that relies on a first order phase transition in a dark sector in the early Universe, before recombination. This will lead to a short phase of a New Early Dark Energy (NEDE) component and can explain the observations. We model the false vacuum decay of the NEDE scalar field as a sudden transition from a cosmological constant source to a decaying fluid with constant equation of state. The corresponding fluid perturbations are covariantly matched to the adiabatic fluctuations of a sub-dominant scalar field that triggers the phase transition. Fitting our model to measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO, and supernovae (SNe) yields a significant improvement of the best-fit compared with the standard cosmological model without NEDE. We find the mean value of the present Hubble parameter in the NEDE model to be $H_0=71.4 \pm 1.0 ~\textrm{km}\, \textrm{s}^{-1}\, \textrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ ($68\, \%$ C.L.).

Boiling After the Dust Settles: Constraining First-Order Phase Transitions During Dark Energy Domination
CMB anisotropies from stochastic bubble nucleation constrain late-time phase transitions to release less than ~1% of dark energy when β/H⋆≲25, much tighter than Hubble-budget limits.

Hubble tension: the shape wall
Late-time modifications to the expansion history can raise H0 by at most about 2% (conservative) to 3.7% (permissive) if the CMB acoustic scale is fixed.

The $H_0$ world cup. II. A comprehensive competition between proposed Hubble tension solutions
Against a common 2025-26 dataset (Planck PR4, ACT DR6, SPT-3G, DESI DR2, Pantheon+), early dark energy and early modified gravity models win the H0 competition (~3σ residual tension), while radiation and late-time sol...

BAO miscalibration cannot rescue late-time solutions to the Hubble tension
Even after rescaling BAO data to prefer H0≈73 km/s/Mpc, none of six tested late-time dark-energy models can resolve the Hubble tension once unanchored SNeIa and CMB geometry are included.

Bridge the Cosmological Tensions with Thawing Gravity
Thawing Gravity, a scalar-tensor theory with a non-minimally coupled scalar field, fits the full cosmological dataset better than LambdaCDM and yields H0=71.78+/-0.86 and S8=0.793+/-0.012.

Background-level reconstruction of scalar-field potentials from dark-energy histories and comparison with analytic potential families
A background reconstruction maps prescribed ρ_de(z) histories to V(φ) and ranks analytic potentials by Bayesian evidence, with exponential preferred for CPL and shifted-tanh for sign-switching targets.

The $H_0$ World Cup. I. Summary of the baseline group stage results
In a systematic head-to-head analysis, early dark energy and early modified gravity models reduce the Hubble tension to about 3σ and are favored over ΛCDM, while radiation and late-time alternatives are not.

Hubble tension in k-essence: Evidence for robust tension alleviation
Dilaton and tachyon k-essence models robustly reduce Planck–late-Universe H0 tension to 0.14σ and 0.69σ without dataset-dependent fine-tuning of model parameters.

Can the universe experience an AdS landscape since matter-radiation equality?
A universe with an AdS (negative cosmological constant) phase at recombination and another at low redshift is compatible with Planck, DESI, Pantheon Plus and SH0ES data, though not preferred by them.

Can the sound horizon-free measurement of $H_0$ constrain early new physics?
Mock galaxy-survey analyses show that sound-horizon-free H0 measurements do not currently rule out BAO-compatible early dark energy models, and LambdaCDM-derived priors can bias the result.

Illustrating the consequences of a misuse of $\sigma_8$ in cosmology
Cosmologists should compare clustering amplitude with the h-independent statistic sigma_12 instead of sigma_8, because sigma_8's smoothing scale shifts with H0 and artificially worsens the growth tension in high-H0 models.

Hubble tension: a short review of theoretical explanations

The Hubble tension: A decade review
