Previous works have argued that future gravitational-wave detectors will be able to probe the properties of astrophysical environments where binary coalesce, including accretion disks, but also dark matter structures. Most analyses have resorted to a Newtonian modelling of the environmental effects, which are not suited to study extreme-mass-ratio inspirals immersed in structures of ultra-light bosons. In this letter, we use relativistic perturbation theory to consistently study these systems in spherical symmetry. We compute the flux of scalar particles and the rate at which orbital energy (and angular momentum) is dissipated via gravitational radiation and depletion of scalars, i.e. dynamical friction. Our results suggest that the Laser Inteferometer Space Antenna will be able to probe ultra-light dark matter structures in the Galaxy by tracking the phase of extreme-mass-ratio inspirals.

  1. Stone Skipping Black Holes in Ultralight Dark Matter Solitons

    astro-ph.CO 2026-02 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Black holes in ultralight dark matter solitons undergo quasi-periodic stone-skipping orbits driven by soliton dipole excitations, modifying inspiral dynamics when the black hole is much lighter than the soliton.

  2. Trails of clouds in binary black holes

    gr-qc 2025-12 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Boson clouds around binary black holes generically deplete through orbital resonances, driving eccentricity and spin-orbit tilt toward fixed points—including off-equatorial ones—leaving observable gravitational-wave trails.

  3. Ultralight Boson Ionization from Comparable-Mass Binary Black Holes

    gr-qc 2025-09 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Ionization of boson molecules bound to a black hole binary can dominate gravitational-wave losses during early inspiral, imprinting a turnover in the nanohertz GW background and circularizing the orbit.

  4. Kerr black holes with vector dark matter hair

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Massive vector dark matter forms a r^{-3/2} density spike around a Kerr black hole and, for co-rotating low-frequency modes, extracts mass and angular momentum through superradiant scattering.

  5. Extreme mass-ratio inspirals into Newtonian Proca stars

    gr-qc 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

For Newtonian Proca stars, a perturbing object on a circular orbit loses nearly the same energy in the vector ground state as in the scalar boson-star ground state (within ~20%), while the spherical excited Proca stat...

  6. Relativistic Tidal Transitions of Saturated Kerr Boson Clouds

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Relativistic Kerr wavefunctions change tidal transition matrix elements of saturated boson clouds by up to 21.7% relative to the hydrogenic approximation, with the radial profile responsible for ~80% of the change.

  7. Gravitational-wave tails and memory effect for mergers in astrophysical environments

    gr-qc 2025-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A dark matter halo around a black hole amplifies the transient tail of a perturbation but leaves the asymptotic decay and the linear memory unchanged.

  8. Scalar fields from nonlinear sigma models on black hole spacetimes

    gr-qc 2025-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Numerical evolutions show positive-curvature SL(2,R) sigma-model scalars create denser clouds and earlier binary mergers, while negative-curvature O(3) scalars spread out and delay mergers.

  9. Extreme mass-ratio inspiral within an ultralight scalar cloud I. Scalar radiation

    gr-qc 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Scalar radiation from an EMRI in an ultralight scalar cloud is computed semi-analytically, showing dipole clouds decelerate and quadrupole clouds accelerate the inspiral, with up to about 100 rad dephasing after 18 months.

  10. Black-hole hair from vector dark matter accretion

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A Schwarzschild black hole accreting from a bath of vector dark matter develops a nontrivial Proca field profile, with density amplified by up to 10^7 near the horizon and mass accretion rates reaching tens of solar m...

  11. Shadow constraints of charged black hole with scalar hair and gravitational waves from extreme mass ratio inspirals

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

EHT shadow data constrain the EMCS black hole charge and scalar hair to about 0.1 and 0.01 levels, while LISA EMRI waveforms could reach 0.01 and 0.0001 levels.
