Over the last decades, cosmological simulations of galaxy formation have been instrumental for advancing our understanding of structure and galaxy formation in the Universe. These simulations follow the non-linear evolution of galaxies modeling a variety of physical processes over an enormous range of scales. A better understanding of the physics relevant for shaping galaxies, improved numerical methods, and increased computing power have led to simulations that can reproduce a large number of observed galaxy properties. Modern simulations model dark matter, dark energy, and ordinary matter in an expanding space-time starting from well-defined initial conditions. The modeling of ordinary matter is most challenging due to the large array of physical processes affecting this matter component. Cosmological simulations have also proven useful to study alternative cosmological models and their impact on the galaxy population. This review presents a concise overview of the methodology of cosmological simulations of galaxy formation and their different applications.

  1. The mass-dependent interplay of active galacitc nuclei and supernova feedback in shaping the $L_{\rm X}$--$T$ relation of early-type galaxies

    astro-ph.GA 2026-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Mass-dependent coupling of AGN winds and supernovae, including a metal-lifting fountain in dwarfs, explains the steep L_X-T relation of early-type galaxies.

  2. The COLIBRE-SKIRT pipeline: Calibration-free dust radiative transfer postprocessing for cosmological simulations

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The COLIBRE-SKIRT pipeline reproduces the observed low-redshift cosmic SED without calibrating the post-processing, using live dust from the simulation and a new 'split & scale' grain-size mapping.

  3. Probing the fate of large primordial perturbations with exoplanets

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 conditional novelty 6.5 of 10

Observed ultra-wide exoplanets already constrain the amplitude and scale of primordial power-spectrum peaks that produce ultra-compact minihalos, with misalignment signatures as a future probe.

  4. Cosmic Velocity Flows: from Theory to Observations

    astro-ph.CO 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A methods-heavy thesis presenting the Sahyadri simulation suite, calibrated filament reconstruction with Fourier smoothing, and the hierarchical Voronoi filament finder Skeletor, with phase-space analyses of filament ...

  5. Direct shear $\times$ kSZ correlation: controlling baryons without modeling galaxies

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A shear×velocity kSZ template cross-correlated with the CMB is forecast to measure the electron–matter power spectrum to few-percent (ACT/SO) or sub-percent (CMB-HD) precision.

  6. Outflows in super-Eddington quasars drive clumpy circumgalactic medium and extended H$\alpha$ nebulae at $z \gtrsim 6$

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In z≈6 quasar simulations, super-Eddington black-hole growth clears escape channels, ejects cold clumps that raise neutral-hydrogen covering, and powers extended Hα nebulae that shrink when the quasar is obscured.

  7. mitigating the overcooling problem with sink-based bursty star formation in a high-z dwarf galaxy

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Sink-based star formation drives clump-scale bursts that pre-clear gas via radiation, raise SN momentum, cut stellar mass by ~3× and raise LyC escape by ~10× relative to a gravo-thermo-turbulent Schmidt model in a 10^...

  8. Perturbative Likelihoods for Large-Scale Structure of the Universe

    astro-ph.CO 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A perturbative derivation shows that the large-scale structure likelihood is automatically expressed in terms of the tree-level power spectrum, tree-level bispectrum, and the (2,2) one-loop power spectrum correction.

  9. Little ado about everything II: an `emergent' dark energy from structure formation to rule cosmic tensions

    astro-ph.CO 2025-02 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

An ensemble-averaged stochastic cosmology with a 'little ado' noise term produces an emergent dark energy that fits late-time data and claims to relieve the H0 and f sigma8 tensions.
