In this review we summarize the current understanding of the gravitational-wave driven instability associated with the so-called r-modes in rotating neutron stars. We discuss the nature of the r-modes, the detailed mechanics of the instability and its potential astrophysical significance. In particular we discuss results regarding the spin-evolution of nascent neutron stars, the detectability of r-mode gravitational waves and mechanisms limiting the spin-rate of accreting neutron stars in binary systems.

  1. Superradiant amplification by rotating viscous compact objects

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Using causal BDNK hydrodynamics, the authors derive coupled gravitational-wave and viscous-mode equations for slowly rotating stars and find superradiant amplification at low frequencies.

  2. Stellar Superradiance and Low-Energy Absorption in Dense Nuclear Media

    hep-ph 2025-12 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Collective nucleon scattering in neutron-star matter suppresses the effective absorption of ultralight bosons at the long wavelengths relevant for superradiance, weakening the link between stellar cooling bounds and s...

  3. Multi-wavelength Constraints on the Transient EP250905a

    astro-ph.HE 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

EP250905a is best explained as a mildly off-axis structured-jet afterglow at z=2.714, possibly weakly magnified by a foreground galaxy at z=0.374.

  4. Hybrid Stars with Post-Merger Rotation Profiles

    gr-qc 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Differential rotation in hybrid stars with deconfinement phase transition allows quasi-toroidal configurations with quark matter rings and leads to degeneracies in rotational profiles at mass-radius curve intersections.

  5. Inferring neutron star properties through gravitational waves from r-modes and their relativistic counterparts

    astro-ph.HE 2024-06 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

Two inference frameworks are developed for neutron star properties from r-mode gravitational waves, one assuming electromagnetic distance and the other estimating distance via universal relations plus an assumed equat...
