After the original discovery of the Kerr metric, Newman and Janis showed that this solution could be ``derived'' by making an elementary complex transformation to the Schwarzschild solution. The same method was then used to obtain a new stationary axisymmetric solution to Einstein's field equations now known as the Kerr-newman metric, representing a rotating massive charged black hole. However no clear reason has ever been given as to why the Newman-Janis algorithm works, many physicist considering it to be an ad hoc procedure or ``fluke'' and not worthy of further investigation. Contrary to this belief this paper shows why the Newman-Janis algorithm is successful in obtaining the Kerr-Newman metric by removing some of the ambiguities present in the original derivation. Finally we show that the only perfect fluid generated by the Newman-Janis algorithm is the (vacuum) Kerr metric and that the only Petrov typed D solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations is the Kerr-Newman metric.

Rotating Black Holes with Primary Scalar Hair: Shadow Signatures in Beyond Horndeski Gravity
Rotating black holes with primary scalar hair in beyond Horndeski gravity produce shadows whose diameter increases for negative Q and whose distortion increases for positive Q, with EHT bounds on M87* restricting but ...

Ringdown waves from hairy black holes
Ringdown frequency and damping shifts of Schwarzschild/Kerr black holes are expressed through the density and anisotropic pressures of the surrounding matter, giving a perturbative map from hairy-black-hole models to ...

Unexpected Symmetries of Kerr Black Hole Scattering
The work establishes conservation of several quantities in Kerr black hole scattering and presents evidence that a spinning probe satisfies asymptotic integrability to quartic spin order at all post-Minkowskian orders.

An obstruction and residual-completion theory for Newman--Janis deformations
Newman–Janis rotations of black-hole seeds are treated as off-shell ansätze whose failure is measured by an obstruction tensor, with a residual-completion criterion deciding when a correction can make them solve the f...

Geodesic structure of a rotating regular black hole
Timelike geodesics in the rotating Hayward regular black hole admit a Carter-like fourth constant of motion, and out-of-plane orbits differ from Kerr mainly at low spin and large length parameter g.
