The effective action for type II string theory compactified on a six torus is $N=8$ supergravity, which is known to have an $E_{7}$ duality symmetry. We show that this is broken by quantum effects to a discrete subgroup, $E_7(\Z)$, which contains both the T-duality group $SO(6,6;\Z)$ and the S-duality group $SL(2;\Z)$. We present evidence for the conjecture that $E_7(\Z)$ is an exact \lq U-duality' symmetry of type II string theory. This conjecture requires certain extreme black hole states to be identified with massive modes of the fundamental string. The gauge bosons from the Ramond-Ramond sector couple not to string excitations but to solitons. We discuss similar issues in the context of toroidal string compactifications to other dimensions, compactifications of the type II string on $K_3\times T^2$ and compactifications of eleven-dimensional supermembrane theory.

  1. Gravitational Effective Theories with Maximal Supersymmetry and a Peculiar Parity

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0

Peculiar parity plus N=8 SUSY, tree-level factorization, and finitely many states at the mass gap uniquely select the Virasoro–Shapiro amplitude among weakly-coupled UV completions of N=8 supergravity.

  2. Compactifying the Sen Action: Six Dimensions

    hep-th 2026-04 conditional novelty 7.0

A consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the two-metric Sen action needs zero-modes of both Laplacians, while the extra fields are locally removable on-shell.

  3. Symmetries of non-maximal supergravities with higher-derivative corrections

    hep-th 2026-03 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Higher-derivative corrections explicitly break all hidden symmetry enhancements in the three-dimensional reductions of non-maximal supergravities.

  4. Effective Field Theory of Noncritical M-theory from Bosonization

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.5

Coadjoint-orbit bosonization of the Hořava-Keeler noncritical M-theory Fermi liquid yields a continuous family of interacting 1+1d chiral bosons whose density correlators match the exact Fermi liquid semiclassically.

  5. Bordisms between 9d type IIB supergravities and commutator widths of duality groups

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Proposes a refinement of the Swampland Cobordism Conjecture for Ω1(BG) with duality bundle G, where diverging commutator width of G requires infinitely many duality defects to realize monodromies via gravitational solitons.

  6. Bordisms between 9d type IIB supergravities and commutator widths of duality groups

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Proposes a refinement of the Swampland Cobordism Conjecture for duality groups, arguing that diverging commutator widths necessitate infinitely many duality defects to realize monodromies in 9d supergravity bordisms.

  7. The emergence of inherently 9-dimensional one-loop effective action from T-duality

    hep-th 2025-12 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Derives inherently 9D one-loop effective couplings in type IIB from T-duality on reduced IIA terms at order alpha'^3, demonstrating S-duality invariance without tree-level or non-perturbative input and consistency wit...

  8. Only Flat Spacetime is Full BPS in Four Dimensional N=3 and N=4 Supergravity

    hep-th 2025-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Flat spacetime is the only fully supersymmetric solution in four-dimensional N=3 and N=4 higher derivative Poincaré supergravity, unlike N=2 where Bertotti-Robinson geometry also qualifies.

  9. A Circle That Won't Return: The Fate of RR Fluxes and D-branes in Type 0A Tachyon Condensation

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0

In type 0A on a two-circle wedge, isolated collapsing-branch D_p^- sources incur infinite RR field energy cost as the branch shrinks, with possible infrared screening or discharge to D_p^+ via an effective relative-ch...

  10. Compactifying the Sen Action: Six Dimensions

    hep-th 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Upper bounds are placed on the order of enhanced discrete gauge symmetries in supersymmetric supergravity theories with 8 or more supercharges, with some bounds saturated by string theory examples.
