The actions, anomalies, and quantization conditions allow the M2-brane and the M5-brane to support, in a natural way, structures beyond Spin on their worldvolumes. The main examples are twisted String structures. This also extends to twisted String^c structures, which we introduce and relate to twisted String structures. The relation of the C-field to Chern-Simons theory suggests the use of the String cobordism category to describe the M2-brane.

  1. Anomaly-induced vanishing of brane partition functions

    hep-th 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Anomalies imply vanishing brane partition functions; this yields unified derivations of the Freed-Witten and M5 shifted-quantization conditions and new S-fold D3-brane constraints.

  2. Six-dimensional gauge theories and (twisted) generalized cohomology

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Combining an abelianized Yang-Mills field with its dual in 6D N=(1,0) supergravity yields a class in twisted K-theory, with the B-field as twist.
