abstract

The brightness of the tip of the red-giant branch (TRGB) allows one to constrain novel energy losses that would lead to a larger core mass at helium ignition and thus to a brighter TRGB than expected by standard stellar models. The required absolute TRGB calibrations strongly improve with reliable geometric distances that have become available for the galaxy NGC 4258 that hosts a water megamaser and to the Large Magellanic Cloud based on 20 detached eclipsing binaries. Moreover, we revise a previous TRGB calibration in the globular cluster $\omega$ Centauri with a recent kinematical distance determination based on Gaia DR2 data. All of these calibrations have similar uncertainties and they agree with each other and with recent dedicated stellar models. Using NGC 4258 as the cleanest extra-galactic case, we thus find an updated constraint on the axion-electron coupling of $g_{ae}<1.6\times10^{-13}$ and $\mu_\nu<1.5\times10^{-12}\mu_{\rm B}$ (95\% CL) on a possible neutrino dipole moment, whereas $\omega$ Centauri as the best galactic target provides instead $g_{ae}<1.3\times10^{-13}$ and $\mu_\nu<1.2\times10^{-12}\mu_{\rm B}$. The reduced observational errors imply that stellar evolution theory and bolometric corrections begin to dominate the overall uncertainties.

  1. Decoupling Neutrino Magnetic Moment from Mass with $SU(2)_L$ Invariance

    hep-ph 2025-06 reject novelty 7.0 of 10

A loop-level neutrino magnetic moment is generated via an SU(2)_L adjoint fermion 'bridge', making the mass diagram vanish by tracelessness of the generators, though RG mixing limits the observable size.

  2. Isochrone fitting of Galactic globular clusters - IX. Tip of the red-giant branch for 27 clusters and constraints on new particle physics

    hep-ph 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

No anomalous energy loss is seen in the red-giant tips of 27 globular clusters, yielding g_ae < 3.8e-14 at 95% confidence, the strongest bound for axion-electron coupling below about 1 keV.

  3. Boomerang mechanism explaining the excess radio background

    hep-ph 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A two-stage mechanism where relic neutrinos convert to dark neutrinos in the early universe and later decay into photon states can explain the ARCADE 2 excess radio background while evading neutrino magnetic moment bounds.

  4. Probing the axion-electron coupling at cavity experiments

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Cavity walls radiate microwave photons when axion dark matter generates a chiral magnetic current at the conductor surface, turning existing haloscope data into a bound on the axion-electron coupling g_ae ≲ 10^-5.

  5. Gamma Rays from ALP-Photon Conversion and Inverse Compton Reprocessing in Neutron Star Magnetospheres

    astro-ph.HE 2026-08 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

ALP-to-photon conversion near four pulsars produces mostly sub-MeV emission: Fermi-LAT is insensitive to the channel, COMPTEL data already exclude new parameter space at high ALP mass, and COSI could probe much more.
