We calculate the axion emission rate from reactions involving thermal pions in matter encountered in supernovae and neutron star mergers, identify unique spectral features, and explore their implications for astrophysics and particle physics. We find that it is about 2-5 times larger than nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung, which in past studies was considered to be the dominant process. The axion spectrum is also found be much harder. Together, the larger rates and higher axion energies imply a stronger bound on the mass of the QCD axion, and better prospects for direct detection in a large underground neutrino detector from a nearby galactic supernova.

  1. Improved cosmological constraints on axion-lepton interactions

    hep-ph 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For axion masses above 0.1 eV, cosmology provides the strongest known limits on axion couplings to muons, taus, and flavor-violating tau channels, excluding decay constants up to 10^8 GeV.

  2. Axion lines from nuclear de-excitations in galactic stellar populations

    hep-ph 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

    No 14.4 keV axion line from 57Fe de-excitations is seen by NuSTAR toward M87, M82, M31, or the Galactic Center, yielding |g_ann x g_aγγ| < 1.1e-22 GeV^-1 for m_a < 1e-10 eV.

  3. Unified study of two-meson and axion-meson production from semileptonic tau decays within resonance chiral framework

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Within a resonance chiral model, hadron resonances boost predicted tau decays into pion/K plus axion by factors of 7.5 and 19.2, with branching ratios and forward-backward asymmetries also predicted.

  4. Gamma Rays from ALP-Photon Conversion and Inverse Compton Reprocessing in Neutron Star Magnetospheres

    astro-ph.HE 2026-08 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

ALP-to-photon conversion near four pulsars produces mostly sub-MeV emission: Fermi-LAT is insensitive to the channel, COMPTEL data already exclude new parameter space at high ALP mass, and COSI could probe much more.

  5. Dark Matter Capture in Supernovae Modifies Dark Photon Cooling Bounds

    hep-ph 2025-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Asymmetric dark matter captured in SN progenitors can form a 'dark photosphere' that traps dark photons and reopens SN1987A-excluded parameter space.

  6. Direct detection of solar chameleons with electron recoil data from XENONnT

    hep-ph 2025-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

XENONnT electron-recoil data bound solar chameleons to log10 β_eff < −6.9, independent of the potential index n for inverse power-law chameleons at the dark-energy scale.

  7. Axions at the meV Crossroads: Theory, Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Experiments

    hep-ph 2026-03 conditional novelty 2.0 of 10

The meV axion window is presented as a coherent, cross-validated search program in which string theory, stellar cooling, dark matter, and new detector concepts converge on the same mass range.
