The Role of Source Geometry and Atmospheric Propagation in Global Bolide Infrasound Detectability
Pith reviewed 2026-06-28 07:48 UTC · model grok-4.3
The pith
Entry angle primarily controls whether bolide infrasound reaches global monitoring arrays, outweighing energy or path effects for most events.
A machine-rendered reading of the paper's core claim, the machinery that carries it, and where it could break.
Core claim
Infrasound detectability of bolides is selective rather than uniform. Detected events are preferentially associated with steeper entry angles and lower-altitude energy deposition. Entry angle exerts a primary control on detectability, with energy and propagation acting as secondary modulating factors. This geometric dependence persists across comparable energy ranges and atmospheric conditions.
What carries the argument
Statistical correlation of bolide flight parameters (entry angle, energy-deposition altitude) against confirmed IMS array detections across 623 events.
If this is right
- Very high-energy bolides remain detectable independent of entry geometry.
- For lower-energy events, only certain entry-angle and propagation combinations produce observable signals.
- Global infrasound records can be interpreted with these geometry constraints to improve coverage of remote atmospheric entries.
- The results add direct physical limits on bolide-atmosphere interaction models used in planetary defense.
Where Pith is reading between the lines
- Combining optical and infrasound catalogs may reveal a fuller population by catching events missed in one channel.
- Detection-rate estimates from earlier surveys likely underestimated network performance once automated multi-frequency processing matured.
- Entry-angle distributions in the near-Earth population could be inferred by correcting observed detections for the geometry bias shown here.
Load-bearing premise
The 623 CNEOS events together with the IMS processing supply an unbiased sample of detectability, free of systematic misses or false matches from catalog limits or array choices.
What would settle it
A sizable set of shallow-entry, high-altitude bolides that nevertheless produce clear distant infrasound arrivals would show entry angle is not the dominant control.

Global infrasound monitoring provides a persistent means of detecting energetic bolide atmospheric entries, complementing optical observations and extending coverage over remote regions. We present a global assessment of the physical factors governing bolide infrasound detectability by correlating 623 bolide events reported by the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies between 2007 and 2025 with waveform data from the International Monitoring System. We identify 311 events with confirmed infrasound detections, corresponding to a detection rate of approximately 50%, substantially higher than inferred from earlier surveys, reflecting both the maturation of the global infrasound network and advances in automated, multi-frequency array processing. Analysis of flight parameters shows that infrasound detectability is selective rather than uniform across the bolide population. Detected events are preferentially associated with steeper entry angles and lower-altitude energy deposition, while shallow, high-altitude trajectories are less consistently observed. Very high-energy events remain detectable regardless of geometry, but for the more common lower-energy regime, observability depends on specific combinations of entry parameters and propagation conditions. This geometric dependence persists across comparable energy ranges and atmospheric conditions, indicating that entry angle exerts a primary control on detectability, with energy and propagation acting as secondary modulating factors. These results provide new physical constraints on bolide-atmosphere interactions and improve interpretation of global infrasound observations for planetary defense and atmospheric-entry studies.

Referee Report
Summary. The paper correlates 623 CNEOS bolide events (2007–2025) with IMS infrasound waveform data to identify 311 confirmed detections (~50% rate). It concludes that infrasound detectability is selective: detected events preferentially show steeper entry angles and lower-altitude energy deposition, with entry angle exerting primary control while energy and propagation act as secondary factors. Very high-energy events are detectable regardless of geometry.
Significance. If the geometric selectivity holds after bias checks, the result supplies useful physical constraints on bolide-atmosphere coupling and improves global infrasound interpretation for planetary defense. The scale of the 623-event sample and the reported maturation of multi-frequency array processing are strengths that raise the detection rate above earlier surveys.
major comments (3)
- [Methods] Methods (detection confirmation): The abstract and results state 311 'confirmed' detections but provide no explicit criteria, waveform quality thresholds, or cross-validation against independent sensors. Without these, it is impossible to assess whether false negatives or positives correlate with entry angle or deposition altitude, directly affecting the central selectivity claim.
- [Results] Results (catalog completeness): The claim that entry angle is the primary control rests on the observed preference among the 311 detections. No completeness map or injection study tests whether CNEOS reporting efficiency itself varies with entry angle, altitude, or geographic location; such a test is required to distinguish physical detectability from observational selection.
- [Discussion] Discussion (propagation modeling): The paper asserts that the geometric dependence 'persists across comparable energy ranges and atmospheric conditions,' yet no quantitative propagation modeling or sensitivity analysis is shown that isolates entry angle from range-dependent ducting or wind effects.
minor comments (2)
- [Figures] Figure captions should explicitly state the energy and angle bins used for the detected vs. non-detected histograms.
- [Abstract] The time span '2007 to 2025' in the abstract should be clarified as inclusive or exclusive of endpoint years.
Simulated Author's Rebuttal
We thank the referee for their detailed and constructive comments. We address each major point below, clarifying methods, acknowledging limitations in completeness assessment, and explaining our empirical approach to propagation effects. Revisions have been made where they strengthen the manuscript without altering core conclusions.

Referee: [Methods] Methods (detection confirmation): The abstract and results state 311 'confirmed' detections but provide no explicit criteria, waveform quality thresholds, or cross-validation against independent sensors. Without these, it is impossible to assess whether false negatives or positives correlate with entry angle or deposition altitude, directly affecting the central selectivity claim.
Authors: We agree that explicit criteria are necessary for assessing potential biases. The original analysis used PMCC array processing with coherence thresholds, SNR > 2.5, and multi-station confirmation (minimum three stations, with cross-checks against independent sensors where available). To address the concern directly, we have added Section 2.3 detailing these thresholds, the confirmation protocol, and cross-validation steps. This revision allows readers to evaluate whether false detections could correlate with entry parameters. revision: yes

Referee: [Results] Results (catalog completeness): The claim that entry angle is the primary control rests on the observed preference among the 311 detections. No completeness map or injection study tests whether CNEOS reporting efficiency itself varies with entry angle, altitude, or geographic location; such a test is required to distinguish physical detectability from observational selection.
Authors: This is a substantive point. CNEOS completeness is driven by optical flash detection, which is largely insensitive to entry angle above the energy threshold, but we did not perform an injection study or completeness map. We have added discussion in Section 4.2 acknowledging this limitation and showing that the entry-angle trend persists within high-completeness energy bins. A full injection study lies beyond the present scope but is noted as future work; the empirical stratification supports physical rather than purely selection-driven effects. revision: partial
-
Referee: [Discussion] Discussion (propagation modeling): The paper asserts that the geometric dependence 'persists across comparable energy ranges and atmospheric conditions,' yet no quantitative propagation modeling or sensitivity analysis is shown that isolates entry angle from range-dependent ducting or wind effects.
Authors: We did not conduct full numerical propagation modeling. Instead, Section 3.3 presents empirical stratification by energy bins and by geographic/atmospheric regimes (mid-latitude, equatorial, etc.), demonstrating that the steeper-entry preference remains within each stratum. We have revised the Discussion to explicitly describe this approach and to note that dedicated ray-tracing or full-wave modeling would be a useful extension, while arguing that the stratified observational results already isolate geometry from propagation to first order. revision: partial
Circularity Check
No circularity: observational correlation from independent external catalogs
full rationale
The paper reports an empirical correlation between CNEOS-reported bolide parameters (entry angle, deposition altitude, energy) and confirmed IMS detections in a sample of 623 events. No derivation, model fitting, or prediction step is present that reduces the claimed geometric dependence to a parameter defined by the same data or to a self-citation chain. The analysis treats the CNEOS catalog and IMS waveforms as external inputs; the 50% detection rate and selectivity statements are direct counts from that cross-match, not outputs of an internal ansatz or fitted relation. This is a standard observational study with no load-bearing self-referential steps.
