We discuss the astrophysical science case for a decihertz gravitational-wave mission. We focus on unique opportunities for scientific discovery in this frequency range, including probes of type IA supernova progenitors, mergers in the presence of third bodies, intermediate mass black holes, seeds of massive black holes, improved sky localization, and tracking the population of merging compact binaries.

  1. How lonely are the Binary Compact Objects Detected by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration?

    astro-ph.HE 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 7.0

No three-body encounter signatures detected in GW170817, GW190814, and GW230627_015337, constraining intermediate-mass black holes above 100 solar masses within roughly 0.1 AU of these binaries.

  2. Detecting White Dwarf Binary Mergers with Gravitational Waves

    gr-qc 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0

MAGIS Space and AEDGE could detect white-dwarf-binary mergers in the 10 mHz–1 Hz band, giving early warning of Type Ia supernova explosions at rates of roughly one every four years and a few hundred per year, respectively.

  3. Waveform Modelling for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna

    gr-qc 2023-11 unverdicted novelty 2.0

A review of existing waveform models for LISA sources and the challenges that must still be overcome.
