abstract

We analyze the u-plane contribution to Donaldson invariants of a four-manifold X. For $b_2^+(X)>1$, this contribution vanishes, but for $b_2^+=1$, the Donaldson invariants must be written as the sum of a u-plane integral and an SW contribution. The u-plane integrals are quite intricate, but can be analyzed in great detail and even calculated. By analyzing the u-plane integrals, the relation of Donaldson theory to N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be described much more fully, the relation of Donaldson invariants to SW theory can be generalized to four-manifolds not of simple type, and interesting formulas can be obtained for the class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields. We also show how the results generalize to extensions of Donaldson theory obtained by including hypermultiplet matter fields.

  1. Topological Twisting of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ Supersymmetric Field Theories

    hep-th 2024-11 conditional novelty 8.0 of 10

For any 4d N=2 theory, topologically twisted partition functions depend on the diffeomorphism type, 't Hooft fluxes, and a generalized spin-c structure.

  2. Generalized Families of QFTs

    hep-th 2026-02 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Generalized family anomalies for broken higher-group and non-invertible symmetries constrain RG flows and IR phases of QFT families, with explicit application to deformed 4d QCD.

  3. Instantons from Blow-up

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The instanton partition function of many 4d N=2 and 5d N=1 gauge theories is fully determined by the perturbative part via generalized Nakajima-Yoshioka blowup equations.

  4. Refined Vafa-Witten invariants for toric surfaces from supersymmetric localization in 5D gauge theory

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

5D N=1* supersymmetric localization on toric surfaces equals refined Vafa–Witten invariants for odd first Chern class; the even-c1 case fails without a hand-added constant.
