We review the present status of black hole thermodynamics. Our review includes discussion of classical black hole thermodynamics, Hawking radiation from black holes, the generalized second law, and the issue of entropy bounds. A brief survey also is given of approaches to the calculation of black hole entropy. We conclude with a discussion of some unresolved open issues.

  1. Frame invariant diffusive formulation of scalar-tensor gravity

    gr-qc 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Scalar-tensor gravity admits a frame-invariant perfect-fluid description with zero temperature, so that general relativity corresponds to diffusive equilibrium for both minimal and nonminimal theories.

  2. Thermodynamic Phase Transitions in Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

    hep-th 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Scalarization in EMSGB gravity enables free-energy crossings between scalarized and Reissner-Nordström black holes, producing up to three phase transitions whose order changes with coupling strength.

  3. Holographic Stirling engines and the route to Carnot efficiency

    hep-th 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Stirling efficiency reaches Carnot when fixed-volume heat capacity is volume-independent, true for classical gases but not quantum or CFTs; holographic CFTs approach Carnot at large potentials with faster convergence ...

  4. Homothetic Killing horizons in generic Vaidya spacetimes

    gr-qc 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Generic Vaidya spacetimes with linear time-dependent mass, charge or rotation admit unique homothetic Killing vectors, allowing conformal mapping to stationary metrics and thermodynamic analysis of homothetic Killing ...

  5. Energy conditions in static, spherically symmetric spacetimes and effective geometries

    gr-qc 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

A logarithmic correction to Schwarzschild in static spherical symmetry obeys all classical energy conditions and serves as an effective exterior for horizon-bearing and horizonless compact objects.

  6. Holographic pressure and volume for black holes

    hep-th 2026-02 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Introduces a holographic pressure and volume for static spherically symmetric black holes via quasi-local thermodynamics, showing large black holes become extensive in the large-system limit while small ones do not.

  7. Holographic Extended Thermodynamics of deformed AdS-Schwarzschild black hole

    hep-th 2025-08 unverdicted novelty 4.0

Analyzes bulk and boundary phase transitions in deformed AdS-Schwarzschild black holes using gravitational decoupling and holographic extended thermodynamics.

  8. A Note on Chaos in Hayward Black Holes with String Fluids

    gr-qc 2025-07 unverdicted novelty 4.0

Melnikov analysis shows charge is essential for chaos under temporal perturbations in Hayward black holes with string fluids while spatial perturbations always produce chaos, with Lyapunov exponents modulated by strin...

  9. Superradiance -- the 2020 Edition

    gr-qc 2015-01 unverdicted novelty 4.0

Black-hole superradiance extracts energy via the ergoregion and can trigger instabilities with applications to dark matter, beyond-Standard-Model physics, and laboratory analogs.
