abstract

We point out a connection between the emergence of bulk locality in AdS/CFT and the theory of quantum error correction. Bulk notions such as Bogoliubov transformations, location in the radial direction, and the holographic entropy bound all have natural CFT interpretations in the language of quantum error correction. We also show that the question of whether bulk operator reconstruction works only in the causal wedge or all the way to the extremal surface is related to the question of whether or not the quantum error correcting code realized by AdS/CFT is also a "quantum secret sharing scheme", and suggest a tensor network calculation that may settle the issue. Interestingly, the version of quantum error correction which is best suited to our analysis is the somewhat nonstandard "operator algebra quantum error correction" of Beny, Kempf, and Kribs. Our proposal gives a precise formulation of the idea of "subregion-subregion" duality in AdS/CFT, and clarifies the limits of its validity.

A solvable model of 3d quantum gravity

hep-th · 2026-05-12 · unverdicted · novelty 7.0

A solvable 3d quantum gravity model is defined by summing Virasoro TQFT copies over all topologies, shown to be dual to a 2d CFT ensemble and to exhibit semiclassical features such as cured negative density of states and Hawking-Page transition in the large-c limit.

Hofstadter's Butterfly in AdS$_3$ Black Holes

hep-th · 2026-04-15 · unverdicted · novelty 7.0

A single-band lattice model on the BTZ cylinder produces a curvature-dependent Harper equation whose spectra show sharpened butterfly fragmentation at weak curvature and suppressed magnetic response near larger horizons.

Pseudorandom Dynamics in the SYK Model and Cryptographic Censorship in JT Gravity

hep-th · 2026-05-24 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

SYK disorder is shown to be an approximate unitary k-design for poly(N) k; under the planted-SYK hardness conjecture this yields gravitationally pseudorandom unitaries, implying cryptographic censorship in JT gravity with the regularized maximal geodesic length as distinguisher.

Modular Witten Diagrams and Quantum Extremality

hep-th · 2025-12-12 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

Modular Witten diagrams reproduce the O(λ² G_N) correction to holographic entanglement entropy, matching the canonical energy term in the quantum Ryu-Takayanagi formula with wedge shape deformation.

hep-th · 2026-06-18 · unverdicted · novelty 5.0

The vecro hypothesis introduces a lattice model of the gravitational vacuum whose extended correlations nucleate fuzzballs that destroy semiclassical spacetime near trapped surfaces.

Modular quantization and black holes

hep-th · 2026-06-10 · unverdicted · novelty 5.0

Modular quantization of a single holographic CFT reproduces exact Hartle-Hawking correlators of smooth BTZ black holes in the semiclassical limit while yielding non-smooth stretched-horizon descriptions at finite GN.
